4 ways Man Utd can line up in if they sign ex-Chelsea flop Alvaro Morata

New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag got off to a torrid opening game in the Premier League.

The side lost 2-1 to Brighton at Old Trafford, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s substitute appearance not enough to save the club. Regardless of whether Ronaldo leaves or stays, United are believed to be on the lookout for another attacker to come in and bolster the side.

One man who’s been linked is Alvaro Morata. The former Chelsea striker has just a single year left on his deal at Atletico Madrid and boss Diego Simeone is willing to let him leave.

Here Daily Star Sport take a look at some of the ways that Erik ten Hag’s side can line up if Morata is indeed signed by the club.

Option 1: Playing it safe – 4-2-3-1

Bringing Ralf Rangnick back in any capacity probably won’t set the imagination alight but with this model United can keep things simple.

Morata leads the line as a solo forward while the creative prowess of Jadon Sancho, Christian Eriksen, and Bruno Fernandes sit behind.

Until the club brings in that much-needed central midfielder during the window, Scott McTominay and Fred occupies the holding position, as they well for all of these line-ups.

Option 2: The dominant 4-3-3

This formation has been used with great success by the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle and Arsenal.

In this case, Eriksen sits slightly advanced to the other two, while Marcus Rashford and Sancho offer dynamism from the flanks. Bruno Fernandes could also slot in with Eriksen replacing one of Fred or Scott McTominay.

Morata will enjoy the chances surely made by the flair players around him, while he can make dangerous runs into space.

Option 3: Four-four bl**dy two

A slight fusion of Rangnick’s early model – the 4-2-2-2 – and a straight-up 4-4-2. The formation that brought Sir Alex Ferguson so much focus.

Morata and Rashford to link up and lead the line as a partnership, while they can link up with the wingers to overload the opposition’s flanks. Surly a win-win scenario.

In defence, Eriksen and Sancho can come in closer together and offer some solidity.

Option 4: The one with Ronaldo

We couldn't get through this without featuring the one and only. Ronaldo. The Portuguese star to play from the front line – with Morata poised behind him in a false nine role.

With his shooting boots, Morata will surely be there to pick up on any second balls that evade Ronaldo up top.

Of course, this formula might be a little lacking in the press department – but the speed in which the wingers possess could work well.
