‘3/10’ Messi and PSG flops savaged as ‘average players continue to die’ in Paris

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe were savaged by French newspaper L'Equipe following their Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

The World Cup winning Argentina skipper and hat-trick hero in the final were part of Christophe Galtier's flops who lost 1-0 at home and 2-0 in Germany to crash out.

Although the 35-year-old and 24-year-old have had a hand in 46 goals in Ligue 1 so far this season, their ratings of three out of 10 apiece sum up their dismal performances.

L'Equipe wrote of Messi: "[His performance] is too little and is very disappointing in a match of this importance. He was very disappointing."

They added that Mbappe, who was 'feared' by Bayern coming into the fixture, failed in his battle with France international team-mate Dayot Upamecano.

Columnist Vincent Duluc was not holding back in his verdict of the team as a whole, he said: "There is no reason for the greatest players in the world to come to Paris for anything other than a better contract than elsewhere.

"No reason, either, for the average players not to continue to die there."

With Messi and Mbappe scoring 3/10, the only team-mate with a lower rating was Marco Verratti, who played a key role in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's opening goal for Bayern.

With Achraf Hakimi and Vitinha scoring four, Fabian Ruiz nabbed a five with Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Danilo Pereira on six and Nuno Mendes on seven, with Marquinhos N/A.

Under fire manager Galtier talked up the importance of winning Ligue 1 in the aftermath of the round of 16 exit, having only progressed past that stage twice in seven seasons.

He said: "We are going to make sure to get the title of champions. We will see when we will recover our players and have an almost complete workforce.

"Is it a bad season if we are only champions? I leave it up to other people to judge. Obviously there were a lot of expectations for the Champions League. The big regret is not being able to fight with all our strength."
