Erik ten Hag was left furious with the ‘unacceptable’ performance of his side in the Europa League elimination against Sevilla, beaten 3-0 in Spain on Thursday night and crashing out 5-2 on aggregate.
The Dutchman has been eager to continue his rebuild at the club after bringing in five new players last summer. According to The Daily Telegraph, the manager has already reached decisions on a number of players, with the performances against Sevilla serving to harden his stance.
United are also looking to raise cash to fund new additions with the club faced with tighter financial restrictions. A number of players now face being offloaded.
Club captain Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Anthony Martial, all who started against Sevilla, are among the most high profile stars who are ‘vulnerable’ to the clear-out.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams and Anthony Elanga are also at risk with Eric Bailly and Alex Telles no longer needed. Dean Henderson, on loan at Nottingham Forest, is also likely to leave with Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe also heading for the door with their contracts set to expire at the summer.
Currently, Scott McTominay is viewed as a valuable squad player with United not actively looking to sell him this summer. However, with Newcastle United said to be eager to sign the Scotland international, that stance may change should the right offer come in.
There is also uncertainty around the future of David de Gea, who has also entered the final months of his contract at the club.
The Spaniard endured a woeful night against Sevilla which will have not helped his bid to extend his stay at the club. United have been in talks with the goalkeeper over a new deal on reduced terms.
Despite their improvement this term, United have been on the end of a number of humiliating defeats this season, losing heavily to Brentford and Manchester City along with the 7-0 thrashing at Liverpool with defeat in Spain their latest blow.
‘We have to do better, that’s the demand,’ Ten Hag told BT Sport.
‘We were not composed, not calm. We didn’t beat the press, when you do there are so many spaces behind, and it was obvious at the start how to do it.
‘We lost the battles, they had more passion, more desire, more willingness, that’s difficult to win games.
‘We can’t run away from it. On Sunday we have another opportunity and have to step up and show more character and personality.’
