Wigan ran in four tries at the expense of bottom club Wakefield to go top of the Betfred Super League table.

The game was over a contest after 40 minutes with the Warriors leading 18-0 thanks to tries from Liam Marshall, Abbas Miski and Ethan Havard as Wakefield did not offer up much in terms of attack or defence.

Trinity improved slightly after the break and almost scored through Liam Kay – who was a late replacement for Will Dagger – and they did get the first points of the second period with Jay Pitts going over.

Bevan French crossed over for his 100th career try – his 65th for the Cherry and Whites – to secure the two points in what was not the most entertaining of matches.

It took just seven minutes for the Warriors to get on the scoreboard. They had dominated proceedings beforehand with French going close, before Marshall picked up a long ball from French to score in the corner. Harry Smith made it 6-0.

Wigan Warriors secured a convincing victory over Wakefield to go to the top of the table

Wakefield were out of contest after the 40 minute mark with Wigan leading 18-0

Wakefield’s Mason Lino thought he had produced a 40-20 that would have put his side in good field position, but the touch judge ruled it to be short. Their best opportunity came when Pitts made a break up the middle, but he ran out of support. On the next play, Sam Hewitt kicked the ball dead to see a great chance go begging.

Wigan looked like they could move up the gears any time they wanted and they grabbed their second try in the 20th minute as French threw another long ball to the opposite wing, with Miski on hand to dive over in the corner. Smith converted for a 12-0 advantage.

The Warriors looked dangerous on every attack and were frustrating Wakefield at every turn. Marshall went close to grabbing his second before Havard scored the easiest try of his career as the ball fell to him three yards out after Lee Kershaw had fumbled.

Trinity improved in the second-half but were still outclassed by top-of-the-table Warriors

Wakefield needed to score first in the second half to have any chance of pushing Wigan close, and they thought they had when Kay appeared to go over, but referee Aaron Moore ruled he was short of the line.

Wigan and French were having fun and the full-back almost went over following great play from Miski. Marshall was held inches short himself, before Trinity were penalised for a third penalty in a short space of time.

Junior Nsemba replaced Patrick Mago – who got through a lot of work in the time he was on the field – and his first involvement was a strong carry with a neat offload to put Wigan close to the line. They almost scored again, but Toby King was unable to ground Smith’s kick through.

A mistake from Miski put Trinity in a great position and they finally crossed with Pitts forcing his way over. Lino’s conversion hit both posts before going over as they trailed by 12 with 20 minutes remaining.

Although Wigan were never in any trouble in terms of losing the game, French made the game safe with some nifty footwork to go over in the corner after Miski had done all the hard work. Smith was unable to convert but 22-6 was comfortably sufficient.
