George North underwent a cheekbone operation on Wednesday but will be fit to start the Six Nations in what is a huge boost to new Wales head coach Warren Gatland.

Giant centre North took a nasty knock playing for the Ospreys against Leicester in the Champions Cup last Sunday and left the field with blood streaming from his face.

He went under the knife to fix the problem this week but is only expected to be out for a couple of weeks.

It means he will be able to feature for Wales when they kick-off the 2023 Six Nations against Ireland in Cardiff on February 4.

Gatland, who has returned to his role as Wales boss after the sacking of Wayne Pivac, knows North well and will see him as a central figure in a World Cup year.

‘He had an operation and that went really well,’ Ospreys head coach Toby Booth said of North.

‘He’ll be good within a two to three-week period, which is great. I certainly think in the New Year he’ll be OK so that’ll be good for us.

‘Any facial injury is always a worry but he’s all good. He’s got a nice shiny black eye.

‘Outside of that he’s quite buoyant so that probably speaks volumes about how he feels.’
