Owen Farrell has been named as captain for England’s World Cup campaign.

Steve Borthwick made the surprise announcement on Friday morning, more than two months out from the start of the tournament.

Ellis Genge and Courtney Lawes have been named vice captains, as the team step up preparations for a series of warm-up fixtures in August.

Borthwick said: ‘I went and met Owen about 10 days ago. We spent two hours walking through fields outside Harpenden, talking about everything we wanted to do with this team. He’s a fantastic leader.’
