Eddie Jones called on World Rugby to sharpen up their refereeing of the scrum after England’s set-piece dominance could not prevent defeat by Ireland.
Despite a second-minute red card to lock Charlie Ewels, England won six penalties at the set piece but Ireland escaped without further sanction.
‘I am a bit disappointed the referee didn’t allow us to scrum fully,’ said Jones, who had no issues with Ewels’ sending off.

England head coach Jones says World Rugby need to allow strong scrums to dominate
‘That would be my only complaint, we were not allowed to play advantage away from the scrum. We got four scrum penalties and there was no sign of a yellow card.
‘We want to have a powerful scrum and if World Rugby want to have the scrum in the game they have got to allow the strong scrums to dominate. We are disappointed we didn’t get more out of that.’
Prop Ellis Genge, one of England’s standout performers, admitted his team believed they could pull off an unlikely victory.
‘For 65 minutes, I truly felt we were going to win the game,’ said Genge. ‘Even when we went 23-15 down, I still felt we were going to win. We train during the week with 14 or 13 men so we are used to it.

‘I think that showed and we put Ireland under pressure. To play the way we did when we had lost a man was good, but it’s bittersweet.
‘That’s professional sport — she’s a cruel mistress. We had a good game plan and executed it well, but we made a few mistakes and we tired a bit towards the end.’
Ireland head coach Andy Farrell was delighted to come away from Twickenham with a win.
‘I’m over the moon,’ he said. ‘It’s obviously a tough place to come and we should be immensely proud as a group. We go home tonight very happy.’
