Eddie Jones talks up Danny Care as he gets set to squad for Australia

Eddie Jones talks up Danny Care as he gets set to name his England touring party for Australia on Monday… with the veteran scrum-half in with a chance after being given an opportunity to impress against the Barbarians on Sunday

  • Final chance for England players to impress Jones is against the Barbarians

Eddie Jones warned his England side he will be watching to see if they survive the heat of battle against the Barbarians after recalling veteran scrum-half Danny Care for the Twickenham clash.

Care, 35, is poised to make his first international appearance since 2018 after being named on the bench by Jones following a crunch face-to-face meeting between the pair earlier this year.

Sunday’s uncapped Barbarians clash is the final chance for England’s players to earn selection for the three-Test tour of Australia.

‘Last minute impressions are always important,’ said Jones.

‘We always talk about the tea bag theory. You get your tea bag out of the packet and you never really know how good it is until you put the hot water into it.

‘On Sunday some of these young guys are going to be in hot water, so then we’ll see how good the tea is. I’ve always liked Danny as a player. He played a lot of Tests from 2016 to 2018.

‘He’s got the ability to make sure the attack keeps going forward, which given the speed of ball in today’s game is invaluable. He’s a good character. I don’t think age is a consideration.

The veteran Harlequins scrum-half has been named on the bench for the traditional fixture

‘He’s got great desire. After a game recently I texted him to say “well played” and he came back and said he’d love to catch up.

‘We had a coffee and he was very adamant on how keen he was to play for England.’

England’s side to face the Barbarians is shorn of the Leicester and Saracens players featuring in Saturday’s Premiership final and is captained by Tom Curry.

Care is back-up to scrum-half and vice-captain Harry Randall but there is no place in the squad for London Irish tyro Henry Arundell, 19, who is nursing a calf injury.

Eddie Jones says final impressions are important ahead of Sunday’s Barbarians clash at home

International rookies Tommy Freeman and Jack Walker start at full-back and hooker respectively while Joe Cokanasiga and Jonny May return on the wings.

Arundell’s injury will not rule him out of facing Australia with Jones set to name his party to go to the southern hemisphere on Monday.

The experience of the 84-cap Care could prove vital against the Wallabies if Ben Youngs opts not to travel following the tragic death of his brother Tom’s wife Tiffany.

Harry Arundell is not fit enough to play against the Barbarians with Eddie Jones set to name his squad for Australia on Monday

Youngs is on the bench for Leicester in their Premiership final with Saracens on Saturday.

‘The older guys are so important. It is about getting the balance right,’ Jones said.

‘We have got a lot of good young talent coming through. It is a nice period we are in.’
