Brian Moore slams "clueless buffoon" Nigel Farage as RNLI enjoys donation surge
English rugby legend Brian Moore has taken aim at Nigel Farage over his comments concerning the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), referring to the former UKIP and Brexit Party leader as a "clueless buffoon" on Twitter as the charity raised over £200,000 in one day.
In a post on Wednesday afternoon, Moore responded to a tweet detailing the massive increase in donations, writing: "Thank you to everyone who made this so. Carry on Nigel, you clueless buffoon."
In his own tweet on July 4th, Farage had described the RNLI in Kent as "a taxi service for illegal immigration", a comment which sparked huge controversy and caused the RNLI and its workers to face vile abuse.
Farage doubled down on his comments on his TV programme on GB News on Wednesday evening, claiming that he has "massive admiration" for the RNLI but that it "increasingly is becoming a taxi service for the illegal gangs pushing migrants across in the English Channel" and "has effectively become an arm of border force."
Farage's latest comments come in response to an interview with the RNLI and its chief executive Mark Dowie in the Guardian.
Dowie said: "Imagine being out of sight of land, running out of fuel, coming across incredibly busy shipping lanes when you’re frightened and you don’t know which direction you’re going in.
"That is by anyone’s standards distress. Our role in this is incredible important: simply to respond to a need to save lives.”
This is not the first time Moore has taken a swipe at Farage on the social media site. In November 2020, he described the politician as being "too stupid to understand he has contradicted himself" over claims of electoral fraud in the 2020 US election.
Moore played 64 times as a hooker for England between 1987 and 1995. He also played in two Lions tours in 1989 and 1993, and is now a commentator and pundit for BBC Sport and Talksport.
