Bath prop Beno Obano suffers serious knee injury against Harlequins

Bottom-of-the-table Bath hit by a second serious injury blow as England prop Beno Obano risks being out for the rest of the season after rupturing his knee ligament against Harlequins

  • His team-mate Anthony Watson suffered the same injury earlier this month
  • Obano spent nine months out after being injured while on England duty in 2018

Bath suffered more miserable news on Thursday after it was confirmed prop Beno Obano has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and could miss the rest of the season.

Winless Bath saw England wing Anthony Watson suffer the same injury against Saracens earlier this month. Watson, like Obano, carried on playing for several minutes when hurt.

Against Harlequins last Saturday, Obano ushered away medics and even packed down for a scrum having visibly jarred his leg – to the unease of his opponents.

Bath lost the game 31-17, their fifth defeat of the season, and are now up against it searching for cover for the duo.

‘This is a complex injury that takes time to recover. We will provide a huge amount of care for Beno to ensure his safe return to the field,’ said under-pressure director of rugby Stuart Hooper.

‘His professionalism to overcome serious injuries in his career to date has been remarkable. I know this will be no different.’

Obano also suffered a devastating knee and hamstring injury while on England duty in 2018 and spent nine months out. He was not picked in the recent autumn squad before this fresh blow.
