Troubled ex-NRL star Sam Burgess set to take reality TV plunge

Sam Burgess is set to go from the footy field to the courtroom to your television screen.

The former South Sydney Rabbitohs star has faced a series of off-field dramas since retiring from rugby league in 2019 but is considering a chance at redemption on reality TV.

The 32-year-old, who allegedly failed a roadside drug test on his way to pick up his children last month, just weeks after being found guilty of intimidating his ex-wife’s father, is considering an approach to appear on the next season of SAS Australia.

The popular show, which strips celebrities of their comforts and forces them to face challenging physical and mental tests, has been used by the likes of cricket WAG Candice Warner, drug smuggler Schapelle Corby and PR queen Roxy Jacenko as an opportunity to show a different side to their public personas.

Burgess is seen as a prime candidate after the messy breakdown of his marriage to wife Phoebe and his exceptional physical condition post-footy.

The Herald Sun revealed he has “been approached and is believe to be considering signing up” for season two of the show, which is expected to begin filming in early winter and air towards the end of the year.

The Herald Sun also revealed several other stars who have been approached or are expected to form part of the cast.

Melbourne socialite Brynne Gordon (Edelsten), former AFL player Heath Shaw and Olympian Jana Pittman, who was set to take part last season before falling pregnant, are on the wanted list.

Season One also included several former athletes including cricketer Mitchell Johnson, rugby player Nick Cummins and swimmer James Magnussen. NRL WAG Arabella Del Busso and Shane Warne’s son Jackson were also participants.

Burgess is due to appear at Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday, May 4, after he was charged with traffic offences after being subjected to a random roadside drug test in the Southern Highlands in late February.

According to The Daily Telegraph’s Cydonee Mardon, Burgess returned a positive result for cocaine in a road side drug test.

NSW Police confirmed in a statement that Burgess was charged with driving an unregistered car, along with other offences.

It came a fortnight after he was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order with anger management support following a fiery confrontation with Mitchell Hooke – the father of his ex-wife Phoebe.

Magistrate Robert Rabbidge also granted a two-year apprehended violence order preventing Burgess from going within 1km of Mr Hooke’s house.
