Tom Lineham looking to leave discipline issues in the past and secure his future
Tom Lineham wants to learn from his discipline issues – and earn a contract for 2022.
The Warrington winger’s current deal at the Wolves runs out this year and he has not been made an offer to stay under incoming coach Daryl Powell. But after a strong return to form following the latest in a host of suspensions, interest in the experienced 28-year-old is growing.
Lineham was banned for three matches for striking off the ball against Swinton in the Challenge Cup, taking his total number of games missed at the club to 17. And he admitted: “With the suspensions in recent times it’s not been too pretty for me.
“Within an organisation you want to be known as an asset and not a liability, and I think it was getting to the point where I was developing a bit of a reputation.
“My aim is to completely eradicate any discipline misdemeanours from my game and kick on and do some good things.
“I’m making a conscious effort to change my mindset and approach to contact areas and hopefully going forward I can put the suspensions behind me.
“If you watch the Lion King, Rafiki says you can either run from the past or learn from it – and I’ll be doing the latter.”
Lineham had shelved plans to look for a new club until at least next month, but says a local newspaper report speculating on interest in him has boosted his prospects.
Lineham – aiming to help Warrington to a fourth straight win on Wednesday – added: “I don’t know who wrote that but I might have to sling them a backhander because it’s worked wonders. I didn’t really have anything before that but since the article the phone’s been ringing.
“We’ve got some big games coming up and the best form of negotiation is good performances so I’ll look to continue to do that.
“Myself and (coach) Steve Price have got 103 days left together. When he made his announcement that he was leaving, I felt I could walk around kicking stones or I could cherish every moment which is what I'm doing.
“I’ve got a little countdown timer on my phone so I can keep a track of it. It’s a unique situation at the club and it could be very special if we go on and achieve great things.”
