The Gold Coast Suns AFLW side has gone into self-isolation pending further health advice after a player returned a positive COVID-19 test on Monday.
The team is fixtured to play its first game of the AFLW season against the GWS Giants at Carrara on January 9 but Gold Coast club officials are hopeful the squad will be deemed casual contacts so could return to training as early as tomorrow if all PCR tests come back negative.
If the players are deemed close contacts and are vaccinated, they will likely need to quarantine for seven days under Queensland Health rules, which could see them able to return to training on Monday, should they pass a day five PCR test.
Any unvaccinated close contacts need to quarantine for 14 days under Queensland Health rules.
The positive case was identified as part of testing by the club and the Suns remain confident they could still prepare for their round one game even if the side couldn’t train until Monday.
A club spokesperson said the team was seeking advice from Queensland Health and the AFL and was taking a cautious approach to the matter.
