Sports writer Peter Ryan wins journalism prize at AFL Media Association awards
The Age’s Peter Ryan has taken out one of the big prizes at the Australian Football Media Association awards, which recognise outstanding journalism on AFL and AFLW.
Ryan won the award for best opinion and analysis in print and online media, in particular for his commentary on the decision to overturn Patrick Cripps’ suspension for a head-high bump, which he described as “a win for the Blues and a loss for the game”, and his explainer on the role of modern AFL coaches.

The judges said Ryan’s work was “extremely well written and his opinion strongly argued and well articulated”.
The Age’s chief football writer Jake Niall was highly commended in the same category, while Niall and Caroline Wilson earned commendable mentions for best feature reporting by an individual.
Wilson was also acknowledged for her news and feature reporting on television and radio, with 3AW and Nine’s Footy Classified.
The major prize, the Alf Brown award, was won by SEN and Fox Footy’s Gerard Whateley.
“Whateley is the consummate all-round media performer,” the judges said. “Whateley knows his subject intimately, understands his mediums and brings authority, wisdom and passion to every debate.”
