Souths rule out Reynolds rescue as Broncos target double play with Bennett

The Rabbitohs have ruled out upping their off to skipper Adam Reynolds, with the Broncos set to make a double play for the star halfback and coach Wayne Bennett.

Channel 9’s Danny Weidler reported, that despite discussions with third-party figures at Souths, the club will not be renegotiating their final offer to keep their veteran No.7.

“Souths said to me today that they will not come in with a late offer, a last-minute offer to try and keep him,” Weidler told Nine’s 100% Footy.

“There’s also been a number of Souths, I would call them, third party people, getting in touch with Steve Gillis his manager, saying can we do something to keep Adam Reynolds here.

“But everything that Souths are telling me is that they will not budge on their offer.”

The Sharks are still considered the frontrunners for Reynolds’ services with a reported $2.4 million three-year-deal, but the Broncos are confident they can lure the 30-year-old to Red Hill.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters and CEO Dave Donaghy reportedly flew to Sydney to ramp up their pursuit of the 213-game veteran and former Origin star.

The Broncos are desperate to sign a big name in a bid to turn the tables on the exodus of players in light of young gun halfback Tom Dearden joining the Cowboys, following David Fifita’s defection to the Titans last year.

Weidler revealed the double play for Reynolds and Bennett as a twin-pack deal is now on the cards for the Broncos.

“Everybody is saying he’s going to the Sharks and that there is a big offer on the table,” Weidler said.

“The Broncos are confident still that they can get him. I don’t know how they think they can get him.

“I wonder whether Wayne Bennett might end up going to the Broncos in some capacity and take Adam Reynolds with him.”

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly gave the strongest hint that Reynolds’ career at Souths would come to an end in 2021.

“I don’t think we’re resigned to losing him, but clearly we’ve made our offer to Adam and I think we’ve been pretty honest about the position that we’re in and why the offer is only one year at this stage,” Solly said.

“And likewise, I think we’ve respect Adam and his manager’s desire to test the market.

“Adam is craving a longer-term deal, seeking financial security for his family. He’s got four kids, and we can understand that.”

Reynolds has scored 36 tries and 1,710 in 213 games for the Rabbitohs since his debut in 2012 and won a premiership with the club in 2014.
