Shock Broncos target revealed as awkward Seibold claim mars ‘dysfunctional’ club

Daly Cherry-Evans has been revealed as a shock recruitment target for the embattled Broncos as the awkward question arises – have they improved at all under rookie coach Kevin Walters?

The Red Hill club is in turmoil after a 46-6 Round 7 loss to Parramatta, compounded by starring performances by former Brisbane juniors David Fifita, Reece Walsh, and Sam Walker who are all at rival teams now.

And then on Sunday, talented young halfback Tom Dearden announced he will leave the Broncos to join North Queensland at the end of the year.

It leaves Brodie Croft as the only recognised starting No.7 at the club and he has struggled to hold down his place in the side since being brought to the club by former coach Anthony Seibold, who was sacked last year.

The NRL 360 panel on Monday pondered who will play halfback for the struggling team next season.

Brisbane is chasing Parramatta pivot Mitchell Moses but Paul Kent believes the player is no chance of moving north of the Tweed.

Kent did, though, drop a bombshell of sorts.

“There’s a sneaky one for Daly Cherry-Evans, because of Manly’s salary cap,” Kent revealed.

“There’s a little bit of talk, it’s been around for three or four weeks that he’s a possibility because Manly’s cap is in a bit of problem, his salary is linked to the salary cap as a percentage.

“Manly are trying to regenerate their roster a bit… so that’s going around. Whether the Broncos are willing to go there we don’t know.

“They are going hard after Moses at the moment.”

Brisbane has won only one game this year, and the Broncos haven’t beaten anyone other than Canterbury in a long time.

Walters was brought back to the club to grab the reins after a disastrous marriage with Seibold ended in spectacular fashion mid-season, and the team finished last in 2020.

Senior News Corp journalist Phil Rothfield, though, isn’t convinced Walters is doing a better job than he predecessor.

“I said on social media over the weekend, and there’s no way I’d retract it, that Anthony Seibold’s Broncos were better than Kevin Walters’ Broncos,” Rothfield said.

“I think it’s a fact.”

James Hooper disagreed, pointing out Walters is working largely with the team Seibold helped assemble.

NRL 360 co-host Paul Kent revealed one reason behind the club’s faulted recruitment.

“They’ve got a recruitment guy at Brisbane that hardly any player managers talk to, because of his personality,” Kent said.

“The whole thing is dysfunctional.”
