Selwood fined for misconduct after two incidents against the Bulldogs

Geelong captain Joel Selwood has been fined $3000 for making unnecessary contact to the face of Western Bulldogs opponent Bailey Dale during Friday night’s thriller at GMHBA Stadium, and for rough conduct when his boot made contact with Bulldogs defender Taylor Duryea’s leg.

In the first incident, which the MRO classified as misconduct and fined Selwood $1000, the Cats veteran can be seen putting his right hand into Dale’s face as the Bulldog lies on the ground with the ball under him after being tackled by Geelong midfielder Brandan Parfitt.

The vision was widely shown on social media on Saturday as match review officer Michael Christian deliberated on the incident, which was compared to one involving the Giants Toby Greene and the Bulldogs’ Marcus Bontempelli in the 2019 elimination final. Greene was fined $7500 after fronting the tribunal for that incident.

Another incident, where Selwood’s boot made contact with Taylor Duryea’s leg while he lay on the ground after taking a mark, was also highlighted on social media with the MRO fining Selwood $2000 for rough conduct saying the incident was careless and low impact.

After careful deliberation, the MRO’s statement was released just as the Giants’ game with Carlton began.

Selwood has been in superb form again in 2021 and was instrumental in helping the Cats defeat the Bulldogs by five points when forward Gary Rohan kicked a goal after the siren.

The skipper made a desperate lunge with a minute remaining to knock the ball forward into space allowing Geelong clean possession to run the ball from defence into attack where the ball eventually landed in Rohan’s hands.
