NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian slammed over Blues’ Twitter message

With NSW in the grips of a Covid-19 outbreak, social media is quick to slam NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian for anything but this time her social media team has made it too easy.

In the hours before kick-off to game two of the State of Origin series at Suncorp Stadium, Ms Berejiklian posted a seemingly innocuous post to support the Blues.

In a picture of her standing next to NSW Origin coach Brad Fittler without masks on, the post read: “Go Freddy and the @NSWBlues. Let’s wrap the series up tonight!”

It was quickly panned by residents who took aim at the image for not adhering to mask restrictions and social distancing.

However, one commenter pointed out that it was the same picture as one used on June 7 as she sent the Blues off for game one in Townsville.

But it didn’t matter in the comments as Ms Berejiklian was slammed for the picture, particularly as Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains went into a two-week lockdown on Saturday at 6pm.

Didn't you say you'd be at home in lockdown like everyone else?

Good lord, really? Read the room, Gladys.

I don't think this photo was taken today but it's incredibly insensitive to all of those locked down in NSW and around the nation. Please, do better.

Ms Berejiklian and her team haven’t had a great run of getting her Origin support out there.

Before the first game, Ms Berejiklian posted a picture of herself in Blues merch looking at the smallest TV you can imagine hours before the game saw her become an instant meme.

Another picture that could have come from that first photo op as well was posted on Monday June 21, the same day there were two new locally acquired cases.

It comes as the NSW Covid-19 outbreak has been heavily slammed.

Ms Berejiklian insisted earlier on Sunday that she does “not regret a single decision” in the latest outbreak despite heavy criticism of imposing the lockdown too late.

“I do not regret a single decision we have taken because it has been based on health advice. When you are making a major decision to lockdown millions and millions of people, you have to make sure it is based on health advice and not because you want to have zero cases every day,” she told reporters on Sunday.

“I have never cared about what people think about me, but I care about keeping people safe and not putting burdens on them unless we absolutely have to.”
