State Championship players to watch

Let’s have a little chat about the State Championship players to keep your eyes on.

It’s safe to say that Blake Taaffe is one of the most recognisable names of the bunch. The South Sydney fullback is off to Canterbury next year after a signing a two-year deal with the Bulldogs, but there are a bunch of other players to watch today.

South Sydney prop Shaquai Mitchell will be out in the middle today. The younger brother of Latrell Mitchell, Shaquai played 11 games for the Rabbitohs NRL team this year and will be crucial through the middle today for the reserve team.

Cole Geyer from the Brisbane Tigers is a bit of a fun story. He’s the Tigers’ hooker, but he is also an assistant coach for the Titans NRLW team. What a day for him! He’ll be absolutely cooked after his game, but he has to back it up with some wise words for the Titans women later.

And finally, Tyrone Munro. The 19-year-old South Sydney winger was brilliant in his three appearances for the Rabbitohs this year, and his NSW Cup performance was equally impressive. He’s fast, agile and undoubtedly a future winger for the Rabbitohs NRL side.

Temperature set to rise at Olympic Park

It’s an absolute scorcher out at Olympic Park today.

I’ve just arrived at Accor Stadium and temperatures have already hit 32 degrees…yikes.

The heat is predicted to get even worse from here, with 36 degrees on the cards for later in the day. If temperatures do hit that, it will be the hottest grand final on record.

Earlier in the week the NRL said they were open to changing start times, but that’s not looking likely.

Expect drink breaks at least for the first two games and maybe even in the NRL decider at 7:30pm.

Welcome

Good afternoon footy fans and welcome to our live coverage of the NRLW and NRL grand final.

It has taken 31 weeks to get here, but we have finally reached the end of the rugby league season.

First on the agenda today is the State Championship between the Rabbitohs and the Brisbane Tigers. That kicks off at 1:20pm, and there will be a few familiar names in that game such as Canterbury-bound Blake Taaffe and South Sydney young gun Tyrone Munro.

The NRLW action starts at 3:55pm with the Knights taking on the Titans. More than a few stars in that game with Dally M player of the year Tamika Upton trying to win back-to-back Karyn Murphy medals.

And then finally we have the NRL grand final. It’s a 7:30pm kick off for that game between the Broncos and the Panthers. Can the Panthers become one of the greatest teams of all time and make it three wins in a row? Or will Brisbane set Olympic Park on fire with an upset for the ages?

Remember to hydrate, and enjoy the day!
