Melbourne Storm great Cameron Smith retires from rugby league
Melbourne Storm great Cameron Smith announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from professional rugby league.
The club paid tribute to Smith, who played his entire career at the Storm, for the “immeasurable contribution to our club on and off the field” and a legacy that “will be remembered in Melbourne forever”.
“Cameron Smith has today announced his retirement from professional rugby league. Cam is not only among the most decorated players the game has ever seen, he made an immeasurable contribution to our club on and off the field, and his legacy will be remembered in Melbourne forever,” Storm tweeted.
Smith, widely considered a future Immortal of the NRL, has played 430 games for the Storm, and is the NRL’s games record holder. He is the only player to have played more than 400 NRL matches and holds the record as the highest all-time points scorer in NRL history.
Melbourne recently announced that Jesse Bromwich and Dale Finucane as co-captains for the 2021 season.
In recent years Storm have successfully replaced Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk but now have the toughest task of all.
Replacing Smith. The 37-year-old hooker, who made his debut in 2002, has been one of the game’s greatest over his distinguished career, which also includes his decorated State of Origin career for Queensland, and representing Australia.
Speculation about Smith’s future had been constant since the Storm won the 2020 NRL premiership, and the club’s announcement came as statues of Smith and Slater were unveiled at AAMI Park on Wednesday.
