Manly’s Dylan Walker off after ‘atomic wedgie’ hurts hamstring

A seemingly funny moment has turned serious with fullback Dylan Walker copping a serious injury after what NRL great Steve Roach called an “atomic wedgie”.

With the Warriors up 12-6 with 25 minutes remaining, the Warriors kicked for the corner with Walker getting the ball and bringing it back off the line.

A desperate leap from Roger Tuivasa-Sheck grabbed Walker’s shorts and dragged him down, exposing his bare bottom to the world.

But Walker’s hand went straight down the back of his pants, initially believed to be saving his blushes but soon revealing his distress.

Commentator Matt Russell believed the drawstring had snapped.

“What’s happened here, he’s not down for an atomic wedgie, is he?” Roach added, laughing.

But it quickly became clear he was more seriously injured.

“I can only assume there is a more serious problem than that,” Russell added.

“Roger helped pulled his pants back up too, that’s hilarious,” Roach said after the replay.

He wasn’t the only one to point out Tuivasa-Sheck’s act of generosity.

We can laugh, but RTS showed what a thoroughly decent bloke he is, saving Walker’s embarrassment by pulling up his shorts after he dacked him. Not sure how many players in the competition would have done the same. Great culture at @NZWarriors. ????

But the concern quickly turned back to Walker.

Russell said: “I thought the hand got around to spare his blushes but the hand was around there reaching at the painful part.

“Lets hope he hasn’t picked up a serious injury here. A lighter moment as he lost his pants but it’s clearly not, to use your expression, an atomic wedgie that’s troubling Dylan Walker right now.”

The trainers quickly attended Walker but had to help him off the field and into the sheds.

Walker was struggling as he got to his feet and appeared to barely be able to walk.

It turns out it was a hamstring injury and Walker is out of the match and seemingly for some time.

How bad it is remains to be seen but he was taken straight down the tunnel and appeared in plenty of pain.

With regular fullback Tom Trbojevic set to return next week, it might not be too painful on field for the Sea Eagles with Walker filling in in the position, but it’s far from ideal.

With 21 minutes remaining, Sea Eagles star Josh Schuster scored his first try in the NRL making it 12-all.

Incredibly, the Sea Eagles ended their winless streak in 2021 with Daly Cherry-Evans kicking a field goal on the final siren in a 13-12 thriller.
