Goodwin’s behaviour raised alarm at Melbourne and AFL: report

Melbourne held an emergency board meeting before the club’s premiership season to discuss whether senior coach Simon Goodwin should be stood down pending an investigation of alleged behavioural issues, according to a report in News Corp papers.

The report also detailed an unlawful dismissal claim from former club doctor Zeeshan Arain, lodged in October 2020, in which he said he “encountered unreasonable and repeated behaviour by Mr Goodwin”, and that the coach used “aggressive language and tone” when discussing the management of injured players.

Dr Arain received a six-figure payout as part of a settlement in November of the same year, as part of which he was required to co-operate with a board investigation into the bullying allegations.

The report says former president Glenn Bartlett and chief executive Gary Pert confronted Goodwin about his alleged behaviour at Casey Fields. The coach was adamant there was no problem.

According to the report, issues raised at the emergency board meeting just before Christmas 2020 included Goodwin’s alleged conduct at Sorrento Hotel, workplace bullying, a health episode during a fan forum, and gambling in public.
