Geelong consider surgery for injured Dangerfield

Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield is facing more interruption to his season, with the Cats mulling whether he needs surgery on a syndesmosis tear in his right ankle.

The Cats confirmed on Wednesday that Dangerfield had gone to Sydney on Tuesday – first reported by SEN – for a further assessment on his injury in a bid to avoid surgery.

The initial assessment in Melbourne had shown encouraging results but further investigation provided a different report, with damage to the syndesmosis joint – the joint between the fibula and tibia.

The review in Sydney also delivered a sobering report, leaving the eight-time All-Australian most likely facing either rest or surgery, the latter which could sideline him for up to two months.

The Cats said Dangerfield was involved in more discussions on Wednesday, and the club was hopeful of providing clarity by the end of the day.

Dangerfield had said post-match on Sunday that the injury was only a “minor tweak”, after he had collided with Kangaroo Kyron Hayden on the cusp of three-quarter-time at GMHBA Stadium.

This setback continues a frustrating start to the season for the Brownlow medallist. Having battled lingering groin issues through the summer, Dangerfield returned for round one, only to be suspended for three matches for his bump on Adelaide’s Jake Kelly.

Dangerfield’s latest blow comes at a time when the Cats have yet to rediscover their best form and host fellow premiership fancy West Coast on Saturday.

The Cats expect boom recruit Jeremy Cameron to play his first senior match, having recovered from a hamstring issue.

“He [Cameron] is ready to go and he is in,” Cats coach Chris Scott said last weekend.

“I am putting a bit of pressure on our medical and conditioning staff as well, but it’s about time.”

Skipper Joel Selwood said he was fit to play, having had a “stinger” against the Kangaroos.
