Fa’asuamaleaui vows to keep delivering for expectant Titans

David Fifita stole the show against his former club but it was the form of another key off-season addition that could well be the the best long-term investment for the Gold Coast Titans.

Fifita torched his former side with two tries in a man-of-the-match performance as the Gold Coast easily took care of Brisbane with a 28-16 victory at CBUS Super Stadium on Friday night.

It’s easy to imagine Fa’asuamaleaui bracing for a Craig Bellamy broadside but was instead greeted with some encouraging words from his new coach Justin Holbrook. That elicited an impressive response as Fa’asuamaleaui went to work for his new employers.

“Yeah, 100 per cent,” Fa’asuamaleaui said when asked if he had something to prove on Friday night. “I didn’t really have a good performance last week and let the team down.

“I had a lot of errors, especially defence-wise and that’s a big area I want to build my game around. Coming from Storm, that’s what we were built around.”

Veteran forwards at the Storm were impressed with the way Fa’asuamaleaui tried to find ways to better himself as a player, whether it be doing extras after training or picking apart his games. Holbrook hasn’t given him any official leadership role but it’s something Fa’asuamaleaui has taken to naturally.

“I’ve loved everything about him since he joined the club,” Holbrook said. “He has taken that [forward leader type role] upon himself but it’s not really what’s needed to be honest. We don’t have one leader, our whole pack is capable of it.

“He has only just turned 21 and he has a lot of improvement about him and the way he is going about his game is great.

“We’re really happy to have him and in particular for our fans to know we’ve got a guy like that in our side is pretty impressive.”

The Titans were one of the round one flops when they produced an uninspiring effort against the Warriors but might have been the second team in two weeks to be played back into form by the Broncos, who were insipid again and have presented plenty of early headaches for new coach Kevin Walters.
