England Rugby World Cup ace told off by his grandma for getting naked

Earl and England look ahead to Rugby World Cup semi-final

England Rugby World Cup star Bevan Rodd was apparently told off by his grandma for getting naked during his early days in the Sale Sharks team. Rodd was included in Steve Borthwick’s Rugby World Cup squad and was named in the starting line-up when England thrashed Chile 71-0 in their third pool match, marking the occasion with a try.

Rodd, who was born in Scotland, came through the Sale academy before making his first team debut in a Premiership Rugby Cup match in 2019. He has gone on to become a regular starter for the Greater Manchester side and helped his team reach the Premiership Rugby final last season.

In June 2021, Rodd came off the bench and scored a try as Sale defeated Harlequins 45-12 at the AJ Bell Stadium in their penultimate regular match of the campaign ahead of the play-offs. And after the encounter, Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson was asked by BT Sport presenter Craig Doyle whether he had a song to celebrate victories.

As the interview took a bizarre twist, Sanderson replied: “Bevan Rodd usually gets naked and dances round the changing room so thank God there are no internal cameras. It’s not a pretty sight. He’s got a whole litany of songs he picks from. That’s what you’re keeping me from.”

And the former back rower added: “I’m not allowed to talk about him getting naked because his grandma had a go at him about that post-match.

“But he doesn’t mind, he doesn’t mind getting his kit off and he is quite a good mover with it. He is quite handsome for a big lad. Rodd is a bit of a talent. He is a rare talent for someone being as young as he is and being able to hold that side of the scrum up but it is his work around the field that sets him apart for front rowers, for looseheads.”

Rodd is one of England’s most inexperienced players at the Rugby World Cup and will face a battle just to make it into the matchday 23 for his side’s semi-final showdown with South Africa on Saturday. Ellis Genge started in the quarter-final victory over Fiji, with Joe Marler being named on the bench as the replacement loosehead prop while Rodd was left out completely.

England will have a score to settle with South Africa when the semi-final gets underway in Paris. They lost to the Springboks in the final four years ago and were also downed by South Africa in the showpiece event back in 2007.
