England inspired by Marler assist in training as big upset tipped

Rugby World Cup round-up: Home nations success as Fiji stun Australia

England have been playing football tennis during their downtime ahead of their third group-stage fixture against Chile on Saturday. This comes after Joe Marler’s headed assist to Courtney Lawes in their last outing versus Japan.

The Red Roses have got off to a flying start with two wins in two. Their first fixture against Argentina ended 27-10 in England’s favour before Steve Borthwick’s men turned on the style in the second half of their next Pool D match to steam away from Japan 34-12.

Marler’s header sparked a late surge for England, who were only leading by a single point (13-12) at the time. The Harlequins prop joked that he had been inspired by Brighton’s win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

He also went on to draw comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous headed goal for Juventus against Sampdoria in 2018. Regardless of whether he meant it or not it certainly seems to have rubbed off on the rest of the team.

Ireland face

Former England star James Haskell believes Scotland could pull off a “potential upset” in Ireland’s Pool B, while he backs South Africa as deserved favourites to go all the way.

He said: “Ireland’s top world ranking can bring both added pressure and benefits to their World Cup campaign. The return of Johnny Sexton from injury is a key factor to watch, but overcoming their history of quarter-final exits will be challenging.

“Their group is tough, with Scotland posing a potential upset. However, Ireland, under coach Andy Farrell, has the talent and potential to succeed in the tournament despite these challenges.”

He added: “I believe that South Africa is currently the favourite. They have a reputation for being a ruthlessly competitive team, and their past successes, with three World Cup victories, certainly give them an advantage.”

Marler’s header inspires down time

England have been playing football tennis during their downtime ahead of their third group-stage fixture against Chile on Saturday. This comes after Joe Marler’s headed assist in their last outing versus Japan.

A loose ball collided with Marler’s head and fell into the path of Courtney Lawes, who went to score a try and widen England’s lead.
