‘Embarrassing’: Rabbitohs veteran’s all-time blunder

South Sydney Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds has staked his claim for the NRL’s most embarrassing botched try during Sunday afternoon’s victory over the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval.

Late in the first half of the Round 16 contest, Reynolds sprinted through the Tigers defensive line and dived over for South Sydney’s fourth try of the match.

The 30-year-old celebrated the moment with a surfing move, paddling through some waves before jumping up onto a hypothetical board.

But the Rabbitohs’ celebrations were cut short when replays showed Reynolds had placed the footy down after his left foot made contact with the dead-ball line.

“Now hang on a second, that left foot I think came down on the line,” Fox League commentator Warren Smith cried.

“Can you believe that?”

Penrith legend Greg Alexander replied: “He’s butchered it. He had a long time to get that ball on the ground.”

Rugby league icon Phil Gould tweeted: “Why would Adam Reynolds feel a need to run around closer to the posts?”

It’s not gonna happen but imagine if wests come back and win this and Adam Reynolds stepping on the touch line before putting the ball down is the difference. ? #nrl#NRLTigersSouths

That is embarrassing football from both teams. Just awful “defence” and then Reynolds blows the try

Well that's dumb from Adam Reynolds ?‍♂️ #NRL

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, Reynolds became the Rabbitohs’ top goalscorer when he landed his 804th career goal.

The veteran halfback drew level with club legend Eric Simms on 803 before slotting his 804th just before halftime.

But due to strict coronavirus restrictions in New South Wales, there were no fans in attendance to congratulate Reynolds.

After Nathan Cleary was struck down by a shoulder injury in Origin II, Blues coach Brad Fittler has been searching for a new No. 7 for the final game of the series.

Reynolds, who last played Origin in 2016, is in the mix to replace the Panthers star, along with Mitch Moses and Mitchell Pearce.

The Bunnies ultimately clinched a comfortable 38-22 victory, with winger Alex Johnston and centre Campbell Graham scoring doubles.

Johnston became the first player to record multiple tries in four consecutive games for the Rabbitohs since 1910.

South Sydney will next face the North Queensland Cowboys on Friday evening, while the Tigers will enjoy a bye next weekend.
