Demons hand AFL lifeline to Daw

Majak Daw is on the verge of being handed a second chance at an AFL career after being invited to train with Melbourne.

Daw, who turns 30 next month, was delisted by North Melbourne at the end of last season after 11 years at Arden Street. He was not picked up by another club as a delisted free agent and signed with local club North Heidelberg.

But the versatile tall, who fought back from life-threatening injuries to appear at AFL level with the Roos last year, is on the cusp of being offered a spot on the Dees’ list via the pre-season supplemental selection period. Melbourne have two vacancies and have been hit by injuries to tall forwards Ben Brown and Sam Weideman.

Youngsters Deakyn Smith and Kobe Farmer, the latter of whom is the son of former Demons star Jeff, have both been training with the club.

“As part of the pre-season supplemental selection period we have offered Majak Daw an opportunity to train with us for the remainder of pre-season,” list manager Tim Lamb told the club’s website.

“We are looking to potentially further reinforce our tall stocks and Majak will be given the opportunity to impress during this period.”

Daw played 54 games for North after being picked up as a rookie at the end of 2009. His career was in grave doubt after he fell from the Bolte Bridge in late 2018 but he recovered to play four matches for the Kangaroos last year before being axed as part of sweeping list changes at the club.

Daw’s former teammate Brown is in doubt for round one following knee surgery, while Weideman will miss the early part of the season with stress fractures in his leg.
