Beastie joys: The bromance between b-boy and Bondi-bound Knight

One’s a former b-boy, the other a Bondi-bound English international, but together Greg Marzhew and Dominic Young have forged the most lethal wing combination in the NRL.
The powerhouse flankers have scored a combined 46 tries for the Knights this season, and will look to continue their terrific try-scoring record when Newcastle face the Warriors in an elimination final on Saturday afternoon.
“Before every game we’re like, ‘Let’s go do our thing,’ and that’s it. I do what I do, he does what he does, but it does really complement each other,” Marzhew said.
Marzhew’s hip-hop dancing days may be behind him, but they’re partially responsible for his moves on the field.
“It helped me with some type of coordination, I guess I’ve got to thank dancing for some of the skills I possess out there,” he said.
For Young, the opposite is true.

“I don’t know if I’ve got the moves like Greg has. I’ll be the singer, I’ll be the rapper and he can dance,” Young said.
“[I’m] probably the furthest thing from it. I’m the least flexible guy you’ll probably meet, but for some reason when I’m in that corner the instincts just kind of kick over and something just works for me, but I wouldn’t call myself a gymnast.
“I always played a lot of different sports growing up, I always tried a lot of different things so I’m comfortable in my body, I know what I can and can’t do.”
Young has been responsible for some of the Knights’ most impressive try-scoring feats this year – contorting his body in unimaginable positions to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

With 25 tries and counting, Young – who will join the Roosters at the end of the year – has Young set a new club record for most tries in a single season.
But with Marzhew just four tries behind him on 21, there’s a bit of friendly competition between the two.
“There was a bit of banter before he broke the record, and then I said [to him], ‘I’m coming to get you’. But I knew he was going to break it, I knew he was going to exceed the record,” Marzhew said.
“There’s still time – I’ll probably go and have a laugh throughout the week and tell him I’m going to get a hat-trick to try and catch up to him, but I know Dom will always pull a try out of his pocket.”
Knights prop Daniel Saifiti said Marzhew and Young’s tough carries at the starts of sets were as valuable as their try-scoring feats.
“I honestly think we’ve got the best wing pairing in the competition, and I don’t think many people would disagree with that,” Saifiti said.
“I just think they take a lot of pressure off us forwards … That’s why our defence has been so good, because they save a lot of our juice and energy from their carries, and we try to repay them with making it easier for them in defence.”
And while the bromance will come to an end once the season is over, the star duo have an immense amount of respect for each other.
“I’m really proud of Greg and what he’s done for the club this year,” Young said.
“I might be beating him in the tries, but I’m sure he’s beating me in a few other stats. It’s healthy competition, and we’re both making each other better.”
