Stanley back, but Cats face ‘daunting’ finals challenge

Geelong’s ruck woes have eased with the return of Rhys Stanley for Thursday night’s clash against third-placed Melbourne, but the struggling Cats still face a “daunting” run home if they want to enjoy back-to-back flags.

Coach Chris Scott, who will become only the second Cats’ senior coach behind Reg Hickey (304) to 300 VFL/AFL games, confirmed Stanley has recovered from a fractured eye socket against West Coast in round five, and will take on the Demons’ potent double act of Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy.

“It’s exciting for us … last week was a pretty good example, besides [Mark] Blicavs, he can play a role for us in that department, but it’s not our preferred option. We just literally did not have a ruckman on our list besides him, so getting Rhys back is going to be a real bonus for us in terms of the way we choose to play,” Scott said.

Good evening

Good evening and welcome to tonight’s live blog for some Thursday night footy.

Geelong are hosting Melbourne down at GMHBA Stadium and will be desperate for a win to revive their season and stay in the hunt for finals.

A loss and a top-four finish come September will be looking a lot less likely for the reigning premiers who came into the season as many people’s favourites for the flag.

The Demons, however, have been red-hot. They currently sit third on the ladder and last week knocked over in-form Collingwood.

So, all in all, we should be in for a spicy contest.

We’ll have rolling coverage of the game plus any footy news that drops.

And please leave a comment at any time.

Ok, let’s do this!
