An estimated 2000 people who attended the Carlton-Geelong match at the MCG on Saturday have been asked to immediately get tested and remain in isolation until they return a negative test after a person who tested positive for COVID-19 attended the match.

Level two of the MCG members’ stand was declared a tier two exposure site with the Melbourne Cricket Club in the process of contacting the 2000 patrons who were seated in sections N37-N48 to alert them of the government direction.

Anyone else who attended the Cats v Blues game has been asked to monitor for symptoms as the rest of the MCG was declared a tier three exposure site.

The government advice also said that “some staff and patrons present at [the MCG] will be made tier one primary close contacts, and will be directly contacted by the Department of Health”.

An MCC spokesperson told The Age that the MCC would commence a deep cleaning process as per previous incidents, and they would await government advice on what it might mean for the games scheduled at the venue this weekend, as well as crowd capacity.

It is not the first time a person attending a match at the MCG has been diagnosed with COVID-19 with patrons attending the round 10 match between Collingwood and Port Adelaide affected as well as those who attended day two of the Boxing Day Test last year.

On both occasions no one else tested positive and authorities are keeping their fingers crossed that people who were on level two return negative tests.

Geelong are due to fly to Perth to play Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Thursday night and it remains unclear what affect, if any, the news will have on the travelling party.

There are three matches scheduled for the MCG this weekend including Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt’s 300th game on Friday night when the Tigers play the Brisbane Lions. Hawthorn play Melbourne on Saturday and Carlton play Collingwood on Sunday.
