Targa Tasmania rally hit by three fatalities in two days
The iconic Targa Tasmania rally event has been rocked by a double fatality on Saturday 24 hours after a third competitor died.
A 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS hit a tree 6.2 kilometres into the Cygnet stage south of Hobart at approximately 11:45am. Driver Leigh Mundy and co-driver Dennis Neagle died at the scene.
On Friday, Shane Navin died in a crash at Mount Arrowsmith.
“This has been a devastating few days for the Targa family,” said Targa Australia chief executive Mark Perry.
“Today our thoughts and deepest condolences go to Leigh and Dennis’ family and friends.
“Both loved Targa and we knew them so well, which makes their passing so difficult for everyone in our community.
“They will be sorely missed by us all.”
After the crash on Friday, organisers said they made the considered decision to continue with the event but, after Saturday’s fatal crash, the stages were downgraded to touring only and competitors returned to the finish in Hobart.
Navin died at the scene, 35.4 kilometres into the the Mt Arrowsmith stage, when his 1979 Mazda RX-7 crashed at about 10am. Organisers said co-driver Glenn Evans was assessed by the medical crew and cleared of injuries.
The Targa Tasmania has been held annually on the Apple Isle since 1992. A tarmac rally is a form of motorsport where purpose-built rally cars, starting at intervals, compete on sealed roads that are closed for competition.
