Sergio Perez taunts Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz over fall-out

F1 preview: A lap of the Miami Grand Prix

Sergio Perez taunted Fernando Alonso after the Spaniard was spotted in conversation with Carlos Sainz. Pundits have claimed the pair had fallen out recently with Peter Windsor suggesting there was “no love lost” between the two Spanish stars.

It comes after the duo were embroiled in a series of incidents including a collision at the Australian Grand Prix. But, Alonso was seen talking to Sainz in Miami moments after qualifying had ended, prompting Perez to make a cheeky remark.

He said: “What, you’re friends again, cabrones?” Sainz was furious after he was handed a five-second penalty for contact with Alonso in Australia.

The Ferrari star pleaded with race engineers and officials over team radio as the decision was announced while he later dubbed the punishment “a disgrace”. His team appealed the sanction but their protests were denied with Alonso keeping hold of his podium.

Alonso defended Sainz as he explained the penalty handed out was “too harsh”. But, after the incident, F1 analyst Peter Windsor revealed there was some animosity between the two compatriots.

He explained: “So there’s Carlos Sainz on the inside [and] Fernando Alonso is now effectively doing what Charles Leclerc was doing and, inevitably, Carlos runs into him. I’m not saying there’s anything malicious there at all.

“But, of course, we have to add that, as I understand it, Carlos and Fernando have fallen out recently and there’s not a lot of love lost between them now – but that’s not relevant as I’m sure that wasn’t going through the minds of either of them. They were just focused on doing what they were doing.”

The 41-year-old Aston Martin driver also demanded that race stewards investigate Sainz after the pair battled in Azerbaijan. Despite suggestions of a feud, Sainz denied the duo had any harsh feelings for each other ahead of the weekend.

He told Marca: “There is no problem between Fernando and me despite what some have tried to show. Our relationship is still very good and it is neither the first nor the last battle that we are going to have on the track.

“It is normal that some actions are tighter than others, but with the visor down we all want the same thing and fight for what is ours. It’s the beauty of racing and as long as there is respect between all the drivers there will be no problem.”
