Sergio Perez suffers Monaco disaster after Q1 crash as fans claim ‘karma’
Sergio Perez’s hopes of repeating his Monaco Grand Prix victory from last year are over already after the Mexican crashed out of Q1.
The Red Bull driver, who usually thrives on street circuits, lost control at the first corner, Sainte Devote, and speared into the barrier on the outside. The smash triggered a red flag and ended Perez’s session in an instant, meaning he will start at the back of the grid. With overtaking virtually impossible around the streets of the principality, Perez will struggle to score any points, let alone fight for a podium.
Perez also crashed in qualifying at Monaco last year, but on that occasion, it actually helped his cause as it stopped teammate Max Verstappen from bettering his time. Perez started third, with Verstappen fourth, and went on to win the race.

There were suggestions at the time that Perez had crashed on purpose to scupper Verstappen’s last flying lap. Those claims intensified at last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix when Verstappen, who had already won the title, refused to let Perez overtake him to aid his teammate’s hopes of finishing second in the standings.
At the time, Verstappen would only say it was payback for something that happened earlier in the year but it is widely believed his stance was related to the Monaco incident.

With that in mind, many Verstappen fans were calling ‘karma’ following Perez’s costly smash in Q1.
“Karma for last year,” said one. Another declared: "KARMA!!! I still remember last year!!!!” A third commented: “And people wonder why Red Bull favour Verstappen.”
A fourth said: “He wasn’t close to making that corner. Odd.”
To add insult to injury for Perez, Verstappen went on to take pole, with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso joining him on the front row.
