Sebastian Vettel wants to see Mick Schumacher walk in his legendary father Michael’s footsteps by racing for Ferrari at some point in his F1 career. Vettel’s own career with the Prancing Horse was not as successful as he would have hoped, but still believes the team is “special” and feels Schumacher Jnr can enjoy some success in the iconic red car.

While he was rarely near the front in 2021 in a disappointingly uncompetitive Aston Martin, Vettel is no stranger to success in F1.

His total of four world championships – all with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013 – is bettered only by Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Juan Manuel Fangio in the sport’s history.

After that, though, came an up-and-down period with Ferrari which did not yield the success he had hoped it would.

It was an emotionally significant move for Vettel when he joined the team that was synonymous with the success of his idol and fellow German Michael Schumacher.

But he could not replicate what his compatriot had done before him, despite some bright moments in the car.

The final two seasons were something of a sour note for Vettel to end his affiliation with Ferrari on, as the team struggled to be competitive and ended up finishing sixth in the constructors’ championship in 2020.

Despite some not-so-fond memories of his time with the team, though, Vettel still believes Michael’s son Mick should take the chance to race for Ferrari if it comes along in the future.

Asked by F1 Insider if he would advise Schumacher to join Ferrari even in spite of his own failures with the Italian team, Vettel replied: “Yes absolutely. Even if I failed to achieve great success there.

“But I still had good years. And the brand will always be special. In any case, I wouldn’t advise him against the few things that didn’t work out so well for me.

“People tend to see the glass always half empty in memories. I prefer to see it half full and the positives predominate.

“Too much grumbling is misplaced because all of us Formula 1 drivers are doing very well on the bottom line.”

Schumacher’s first season in F1 in 2021 was underwhelming, though he was unable to show his ability in a poor Haas car which failed to score even a single point.

Despite being signed on for a second season with the team, Schumacher Jnr remains a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy and is a reserve driver there next season, so may well represent the Prancing Horse one day – if he can prove he is worthy of a seat.

His dad’s old racing rival Damon Hill believes Mick will have to be given a seat in a better car at some point, and says he has heard “only good things” about the young German.

“There is a lot of interest in him but he seems to be his own man, which I like,” Hill told Express Sport. “He speaks for himself, and I’ve only heard good things from the team.

“He’s a hard worker and he understands the principles. He will need to be in a more competitive team at some point, but he’s been very much hidden away at the back.

“Mick has grown up a lot in the States I think, so he is perhaps a little more worldly than his dad was when he was starting out.”
