Sebastian Vettel’s epic F1 record will remain in place for a while longer following Sergio Perez’s victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, which stopped teammate Max Verstappen from claiming the championship. Former world champion Vettel holds the record for the most consecutive victories after winning a stunning nine races in a row on his way to lifting the 2013 title.
That record had appeared to be under threat this season after Verstappen claimed five victories on the spin, starting with the French Grand Prix back in July. He followed that up with wins in Hungary, Belgium, Holland and Italy and went into the race in Singapore as the hot favourite.
Verstappen could have secured the world title with victory if other positions went his way, but blunders of his own and his Red Bull team over the course of the weekend, saw him finish in seventh.
And it means Perez’s epic nine-race winning run will stay intact for at least another season, with five races to go before the finale in Abu Dhabi.
On his way to claiming the world title in 2013, the German won the final nine races for Red Bull and he also shares the record for most victories in a season. His total of 13 matched that set by Michael Schumacher back in 2004.
However, that piece of F1 history appears to be under more threat from Verstappen, who is closing in on back-to-back world titles.
The 25-year-old already has 11 victories from his 17 races so far and will fancy his chances of adding another three to his tally before the end of the competition. The F1 calendar does boast 22 races this year though, three more than Vettel had in 2013, and four more than Schumacher.

Following his missed chance in Singapore, Verstappen said: “Seventh is better than eighth but it’s not what I’m here for, not with a car like that and what we showed in practice.
“We’re still, I think, 104 in the lead, but it’s just a very frustrating weekend. I could say it doesn’t matter.
“We have five races left, and we have a big lead. But I want to have a good weekend every single time. And this has just been a really terrible weekend, which started with the big f*** up in qualifying.”
