Mick Schumacher has declared his intent to ensure his family name is one day on top in the record books if Lewis Hamilton secures his eighth world title this weekend or in the coming years. One more championship crown would see the Briton eclipse the record of seven career titles he currently shares with the legendary Michael Schumacher.
Hamilton has already taken the records for race victories, podiums and pole positions, leaving him just one more championship win away from total mathematical supremacy.
If Hamilton doesn’t already have a strong claim to be the greatest the sport has ever seen, he will if he wins another world title.
But it would not wash away the achievements of the German, who inspired so many younger drivers with his speed and talent on the track.
To son Mick, Schumacher will always be the best there has ever been in F1 – even if Hamilton does overtake his championships record.
He is of course biased, but says he will not lose any sleep in his dad’s record falls.

Instead, it will give him extra motivation to make sure his own name is at the top of the list one day.
“Who will win, that remains to be seen. And if it’s Lewis, so be it. But for me, my dad will always be the best,” he told reporters ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“My dad always said that records are there to be broken. Accordingly, I just have to get going. I’ll keep going until I finally break it again.”
Mick has shown he has at least some of his dad’s talent in other single-seater categories, but is yet to have the chance to prove himself in F1.

He has been lumbered with an uncompetitive Haas car for his debut season, meaning he has had no chance to show his talent on the track.
Schumacher will continue with the team in 2022, and will be hoping that the new era of technical rules will help the team to field a more competitive car and have a better chance of scoring points.
Meanwhile, Hamilton’s title rival Max Verstappen has also been compared to Schumacher Snr – but warned that he risks ruining his reputation if he takes his battle with the Briton too far.
“I think we’ve seen how desperate both drivers are to win,” former F1 racer Anthony Davidson said.
“Lewis has the experience, been there and done things I’m sure he regrets now but he has that in his armoury.
“It’s more for Max’s sake he doesn’t do something that will tarnish his reputation and something that he may internally regret for the rest of his career.
“Michael Schumacher would sail quite close to the edge sometimes in the tricks that he played in the car and that divides opinion quite a lot. He was masterful but it came at a price to his reputation.
“Both drivers need to defend hard, race hard, take it right to the edge, to the limit, and do everything they can to finish ahead – but hopefully without raising an eyebrow.”
