Sacked F1 race director Michael Masi pops up on Insta reel looking ‘traumatised’

Sacked Formula One race director Michael Masi has been spotted in a random Instagram reel with fans claiming he looks “traumatised”.

Masi’s woeful handling of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021 made him the most vilified figure in the sport. His controversial decision to not end the last race of the championship under a safety car crucially allowed Max Verstappen to overtake Lewis Hamilton with ease on the final lap.

Hamilton missed out on a record eighth championship, while Masi received unprecedented abuse for not following usual safety car rules. He was relieved of his position and returned to his native Australia.

The 45-year-old has since largely remained in the shadows and has not discussed details surrounding his decision at Abu Dhabi, having signed an NDA. That was until he randomly popped up in an Instagram reel looking somewhat shaken.

The clip in question shows an Insta user asking random people on the streets of Double Bay, New South Wales, questions about street food. At one point, the oblivious interviewer approaches Masi, asking him: “Do you know where the nearest Manoushe shop is?”

But a frightened Masi was in no mood to speak about Lebanese food as he shied away from the microphone, walking off while offering a blunt “No”. The video has since gone viral with millions of views on social media, with fans joking about the former FIA man being too scarred to speak publicly following the notorious events of Abu Dhabi.

Others added: “My guy thinks they are going after him. Poor guy is actually scared of microphone and camera,” and “He’s taking that NDA a bit far now. Michael you can talk about kebabs mate.”

The famous incident occurred in the final stages of the race after a red flag was waved for a Nicholas Latifi crash. Masi went against the grain, deciding that lapped cars wouldn’t have to get out of the way before the race was allowed to continue.

Hamilton had looked clear to win the race and, with it, a tense and thrilling championship. But the shocking call instead handed Verstappen his first championship on a silver platter.
