Helmut Marko has claimed that Red Bull have new evidence in their case to prove Lewis Hamilton deserves greater punishment for his role in the crash that forced Max Verstappen out of the British Grand Prix. Marko, who is an advisor to Red Bull and head of their driver development team, believes that the fresh evidence will make people see the incident in a “different light”.

While Hamilton received a 10-second penalty during the race for his involvement, Christian Horner’s team have been complaining that the punishment was not harsh enough given the consequences for Verstappen and indeed the World Championship standings.

Hamilton’s successful comeback from the penalty to win the race at Silverstone cut the deficit in the standings to just eight points.

In order for Formula 1 to take Red Bull’s crash protest further, the team need to demonstrate new information or evidence at Thursday’s video conference on the matter- if they are successful in doing so, then the authorities will launch a fresh review into the crash.

In an interview with RTL, Marko spoke openly on the matter although the Austrian admitted that he couldn’t expand on exactly what the team would present: “We are glad it came to this revision and then we will see how they judge it. But I think what we bring forward will put it [the crash] in a different light.

“We bring new facts and evidences that was not available to us at the time of the race suspension, or when the whole thing was handled, partly because we were focused on what was going on with Max and how he was doing.

“We have footages, but they key point is that we bring new evidences, although please understand we can’t disclose the exact details.

“Those facts will be brought forward on Thursday during the meeting and we hope it will lead to a. reassessment of the penalty.”

With regards to what kind of penalty Red Bull are hoping that Hamilton retrospectively receives, Marko was equally forthcoming:

“Appropriate is a penalty that would have prevented a victory. A drive-through or a suspension- something along those lines.”

While Marko seemed quietly confident, he remained aware that such review processes are complicated matters and difficult to predict. Marko said to F1-Insider: “Everything is possible- that Hamilton is increased, reduced, or even that he will be completely acquitted.”

In more positive news for Red Bull, their engine supplier Honda have confirmed that the engine from Verstappen’s crashed vehicle is fully functional and will not need replacing – meaning that the title contender Verstappen will not need to worry about facing a grid penalty further down the line.

F1 heads to Budapest and the Hungaroring this weekend for the final event before the mid-season break.

Hamilton is aiming for a ninth victory at the track in what would be a new record for most wins at a single venue in Formula 1 history.
