Piers Morgan labelled Max Verstappen a ‘nut-job’ after winning the F1 World Championship in a thrilling Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The television presenter praised the Red Bull star for taking the title from Lewis Hamilton.
Both racers went into the race incredibly level on 369.5 points after Hamilton tied the scores by winning last weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
And Verstappen clinched his first-ever F1 title following an incredibly dramatic win.
Hamilton, who was going for a record eighth World Championship, had led for the entire race but a last-gasp safety car saw the clash decided by just one lap.
Nicholas Lafiti’s crash saw the safety car introduced, with Verstappen benefitting. The Dutchman was on softer and fresher tyres and was able to pass Hamilton on turn five of the final lap.
Former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan was one of the many celebrities reacting to the pulsating battle. He labelled the eccentric Verstappen a ‘nut-job’ but conceded that the 24-year-okd is a ‘brilliant racer’.
Alongside a picture of Verstappen, Morgan tweeted: “As for this guy, he’s an absolute nut-job but what a brilliant racer.
“Whatever your thoughts on what happened, that final lap manoeuvre was just sensational.
“Congrats Max Verstappen – a worthy winner in the greatest ever F1 season.”
Morgan ended his tweet with a clapping-hands emoji.
