Pierre Gasly has suggested Red Bull’s decision not to promote him again ahead of the 2022 season is based on more than just performances. The Frenchman competed for them two seasons ago but was quickly demoted back to their development team AlphaTauri.

Gasly was ruthlessly dropped by Red Bull and their team principal Christian Horner after just 12 races in 2019, after struggling to live up to expectations alongside their star man Max Verstappen.

After Gasly was dropped, Red Bull replaced him with Alex Albon but the same fate occurred for him too – having struggled to gain regular points at the top end of the table.

Gasly has gone onto prove his critics wrong back at AlphaTauri – where he has proven to be one of F1’s star drivers since his return.

The 25-year-old has clinched three podiums with the junior team, including a remarkable win at the dramatic Italian Grand Prix last year for a constructor who continue to fight it out in the middle ground.

Gasly is just one of two drivers to win a race with the team – the other being F1 great Sebastian Vettel.

Despite his great form for AlphaTauri, he has continued to be overlooked by Red Bull since, who have continued to place their trust in Perez for the 2022 season.

It was confirmed earlier on Tuesday, in a spectacular day that saw George Russell move to Mercedes to partner up with Lewis Hamilton, that Gasly would continue with AlphaTauri in 2022 alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

And with Gasly’s future being finalised for another season, he has since tried to answer why Red Bull continue to dismiss him but struggles to pinpoint an exact reason.

“I wonder why,” he responded when asked by Sky F1 pundit Nico Rosberg why Red Bull didn’t give him another chance.

“There were discussions and I think they were really happy with my performance, but obviously there is not only this into the [consideration]. You know, like me, how difficult it is. They made their decision.

“Obviously it was a small disappointment for me because that’s where I want to be.

“I want to have a fast car. I’m not saying AlphaTauri… you know, give me a really strong car.

“It was up to them. Unfortunately it didn’t happen. It doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future, but for sure next year I’m not going to drive there.”

Prior to the announcement that Red Bull would continue with Perez, the team’s advisor Helmut Marko made it very clear that Gasly wasn’t even in the running.

Marko emphatically shut down any talk of a Gasly return, saying: “Being number one in a very good B team is a very different story to being number two to Max Verstappen at a top team. Mentally that makes a big difference.”
