Ocon wins chaotic Hungary Grand Prix after first lap crash involving Verstappen
Esteban Ocon claimed the first win of his career in what was a crazy Hungarian Grand Prix that saw Lewis Hamilton take the lead of the drivers' championship.
The Alpine driver took the chequered flag ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who was unable to take Aston Martin's first win.
The Formula One grid was tipped upside down after a chaotic first three laps that saw rain, crashes and strategic decisions that backfired.
Hamilton led away from the start but team-mate Valtteri Bottas was passed by both Red Bulls and Lando Norris.
However the Finn broke late heading into the first corner and, on a greasy track, slid into the back of the McLaren who subsequently hit both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Bottas, Norris and Perez all retired but the Dutchman was able to keep his damaged Red Bull going.
The race was red flagged after thee laps with Verstappen down in 13th and Hamilton leading, but on the formation lap the Mercedes was the only man not to pit for dry tyres.
It was a gamble that backfired on a sun-baked track and he pitted a lap later but slipped down to last.
Hamilton struggled despite being a new rubber as Ocon, Vettel, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso and the Williams of Nicholas Latifi led the pack.
The Mercedes came in for another tyre change and was able to get the jump on Verstappen, who struggled all day with his pace following his early collision.
Hamilton's race engineer Pete Bonnington asked for 'Hammer Time' as he scythed through the field before he was again called in and given fresh rubber for the final 21 laps.
In the meantime Ocon and Vettel continued to lead with the German keeping his rival within a second or two throughout.
They maintained positions after the pit stops but were all too aware of Hamilton's charge.
The Brit had an outside chance of the win but struggled to overtake fourth-placed Alonso, who ultimately halted his progress.
The Spaniard eventually made a mistake which allowed Hamilton to pounce and he quickly took Sainz third place too.
A podium place was as close as he got to the lead with Verstappen coming home in tenth, but the Mercedes driver now leads the championship going into the summer break.
Williams enjoyed a sensational day with Latifi and George Russell both finishing in the points.
