Mick Schumacher doubts Lewis Hamilton GOAT claims as he gives Michael Schumacher verdict

F1: How Hamilton compares to Schumacher

Haas driver Mick Schumacher has opened up on comparisons between Lewis Hamilton and his father, Michael Schumacher. The former Ferrari legend is still highly regarded, but Hamilton has dominated Formula One in recent years, leading to comparisons between the two.

Mick Schumacher has cast doubts over claims that Lewis Hamilton is greatest Formula One driver of all-time after giving his verdict on his dad, Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher Jr. is set to follow in his father’s footsteps and make his F1 debut in the upcoming season after signing for Haas.

However, as he prepares to go head-to-head with the only man who has rivalled his father’s number of world championships in Hamilton, Schumacher has admitted that perhaps Hamilton is yet to rival his old man’s achievements.

Speaking to F1’s official website about his driving idol, he said: “My dad! I definitely look at what he achieved and I try to learn from it.

“He’s been the benchmark for so long and for me he’s still the benchmark, so I’ll always refer to him.

“That’s on the sporting side, and on the human side I’ll always admire how his consistency across all those years and how he kept his feet on the ground.

“That’s something I appreciate very much, but also something I can learn from and carry through my career.”

That’s not to say that the young Schumacher doesn’t have huge respect for Hamilton, who has dominated the sport in recent years since his move to Mercedes.

The 21-year-old admits that Hamilton has been just as prolific as his father in terms of titles, and insists that continued success is not “random”.

“When we look at a champion dominating an entire era there is a risk of overlooking something important,” he told Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera Sport last year.

“The enormous amount of work it requires, how relevant are the resources, energy and talent applied by that champion who then wins,” said Schumacher in an interview with

“This is as true for Hamilton as it is for my father. There is nothing random about a great success.

“It’s an iceberg, and we often only see the tip of that iceberg emerging from the water.”

The new Formula One season kicks off on March 28 at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
