Conspiracy theories over Mick Schumacher’s rise to prominence have been rubbished by Franz Tost, who said Formula One legend Ayrton Senna faced similar suspicions early in his career. AlphaTouri boss Tost spoke out as Schumacher prepares for his debut F1 season with Haas in 2021.
Schumacher’s promotion to the top level comes after he won last year’s Formula 2 title, two years after Formula 3 European Championship glory.
His Formula 3 success raised the eyebrows of title rival Dan Ticktum after Schumacher failed to win a race until the season was approaching its halfway point.
The son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher had been in 10th place prior to that, but dominated the second half of the campaign and finished 57 points clear of second-placed Ticktum.
After Schumacher claimed all three wins at the Nurburgring followed by two victories at the Red Bull Ring, Ticktum questioned the pace of his rivals’ car before rowing back on his concerns.

“Interesting is how I would describe their pace and I’m confident many people in the F3 paddock would agree,” Ticktum said, later adding he “never said it was illegal”.
But Tost is confident there was nothing wrong with the set-up of Schumacher’s Prema car – pointing out that Senna had overcome similar doubts.
“It was raining heavily there, and then he won. The engine power is less important in the rain,” Tost told Formel.de.
“It was also claimed about Ayrton Senna in his time in Formula Ford that such performances were only possible with illegal tyres.
“But just as with Senna then, the conspiracy theories are not true with Schumacher either.”
Senna won three F1 titles in three fours, before tragically dying in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, aged just 34.
Schumacher steps up to F1 with big things expected of him as he follows in his famous father, who was crowned champion seven times.
It may be difficult for the 21-year-old to live up to the pressure in his debut season, given he will be driving an uncompetitive Haas car.
The American outfit finished second from bottom in last year’s constructors’ standings and have a big battle on their hands if they’re to enjoy a better campaign this time around.
But in Schumacher Jnr, they have a highly-rated driver who will be desperate to prove his worth.
