Michael Schumacher’s family buy land to build stables and raise horses
The family of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has reportedly bought a large plot of land in Majorca.
Island newspaper Diario de Mallorca says they spent £2.4million on the 13-acre plot in March to build stables and “raise and ride horses”.
Michael’s daughter Gina Maria, 24, is an accomplished equestrian and his wife Corinna won the European Championship in western-style horse riding in 2010.
Gina Maria is in a relationship with Iain Bethke, a show jumper who regularly cheers on his girlfriend during competitions.
The land at the centre of the six-figure purchase is said to be in Puerto Andratx, near a mansion Schumacher’s wife is believed to have purchased in 2017.
The house, identified as Villa Yasmin, used to belong to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. He put it up for sale after the death of his wife Maria Angeles Sandoval.
Reports earlier this month said Corinna was selling their £6.4million mansion on Lake Geneva in Switzerland as the seven-time world F1 champion continues his recovery from the December 2013 French Alps skiing accident that left him in a medically-induced coma.
The land purchase is said to have been made on March 5 after seven members of the same family who had inherited it put it up for sale.
On Sunday Diario de Mallorca reported: “The objective is to raise and ride around 20 horses on it, as Michael Schumacher ’s daughter is a keen equestrian.
“Stables for the horses, that will be transferred from Switzerland, will be built on it.
“The intention is for Gina Maria to practice her favourite sport in Majorca, as the idea is that the family will increase their number of trips to the island, especially in winter.”
It was reported locally last year that dad-of-two Schumacher, 52, had been spending time at Villa Yasmin on upmarket estate of Las Brisas near Andratx in the south-west of Majorca.
German tabloid Bild first linked the F1 legend to Perez’s Majorca mansion in July 2018, saying Corinna had purchased it for £25.8million so she could spend holidays there with her children and friends.
The villa is part of a 15,000-square metre estate which boasts two swimming pools, a helipad, a gym and a huge palm-tree-fringed garden.
Schumacher was relocated to the family home on the shores of Lake Geneva in September 2014 after time at Grenoble Hospital and further rehabilitation at the University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Updates on his health have been few and far between.
He was said earlier this month to be living in Majorca when German magazine Bunte reported the Schumachers’ Swiss mansion was on the market.
French former rally driver Jean Todt, who managed Michael during his time at Ferrari, is among the few people who have spoken about his health.
The FIA president said last December: “I saw Michael. He is fighting.
“My god, we know he had a terrible and unfortunate skiing accident which has caused him a lot of problems.
"But he has an amazing wife next to him, he has his kids, his nurses, and we can only wish him the best and to wish the family the best, too.
"All I can do is to be close to them until I am able to do something, and then I will do it.”
He said in a new interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera this weekend: “I see Michael at least twice a month.
“I do not leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family – we have had so many experiences together. The beauty of what we experienced is part of us and it continues.”
