Michael Schumacher is still 'fighting' eight years on from a horror skiing accident in the French Alps, says his close friend Jean Todt.

Formula 1 fans around the world continue to seek updates on the racing legend's condition, with his family keeping him out of the public eye since his accident eight years ago.

Little information has been released on Schumacher's condition but former Ferrari boss Todt is one of the few people with access to the seven-time F1 world champion.

And he is hopeful his condition will improve over time.

"I can understand why his family and friends are protecting him because we should leave him in peace," Todt told the D aily Mail.

"Michael is fighting, he is fighting, and we can only hope that he will improve."

Schumacher's son Mick is also battling it out in F1 these days – something which Todt is pleased about.

"I am happy that his son Mick is in Formula One," he added.

"He is doing well. He could have a more competitive car but I am pleased he has this passion."

Formula 1 fans around the world watched the Netflix documentary released on Schumacher's life.

The two-hour documentary 'Schumacher' was filmed with the blessing from the family of the F1 great, looking back on his career and accident.

The film includes interviews from close members of Michael's family with Ralf, father Rolf, wife, Corinna, son Mick and daughter Gina-Marie all featuring.

“It’s great. I’m very happy and relieved that people really accepted the way we were intending it to,” Mick Schumacher said at the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi.

“And for people to see the sacrifices he had to take to be able to achieve what he did, and that people now realise it hasn’t been given to him and he had to work for it.

“I think that’s very good and basically what the documentary is about – to show what a hard worker he is and what a fighter he is, and I’m very proud we were able to transmit that with this message.”
