Mercedes fans congratulate Max Verstappen on ‘first real F1 title’
While Max Verstappen clinched his second F1 title in Japan over the weekend, it was clear the scars from his controversial maiden championship haven’t yet healed for some fans.
A 2021 season filled with drama and acrimony ended with Verstappen pipping Lewis Hamilton to the title in the most controversial fashion. Then race director Michael Masi’s bungled handling of a late-race safety car period allowed Verstappen, on much fresher tyres, to pass Hamilton on the final lap and snatch the title.
As a result, many fans felt the championship ended up in the wrong hands with some even lobbying for the result to be overturned. Masi would eventually lose his job over the fiasco and left the FIA altogether soon after.

This season has been more straightforward for the Dutchman, who secured the crown amid bizarre scenes at the Japanese Grand Prix. After he won the rain-shortened race, it was assumed full points would not be awarded.
But when it was confirmed they would be – and with Charles Leclerc losing second place after being hit with a five-second penalty – Verstappen and Red Bull could start the celebrations.
The Mercedes team sportingly congratulated Verstappen on his second world title on their social media channels. While some fans complimented the 25-year-old too, others sarcastically praised Verstappen on winning his ‘first’ crown.
“Congratulations on ‘WINNING’ your 1st Championship,” posted one fan while another said: “Congrats Max and Red Bull for winning [your] first F1 Championship.”

Another fan said Verstappen did not deserve that first title, saying: “Congratulations on his first real F1 title", while another added: “It’s his first world title. Last year doesn't count.”
