Mercedes chief declares ‘pendulum will swing’ with Lewis Hamilton prediction
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has boldly declared that the 'pendulum will swing' for Lewis Hamilton this season as he predicts a comeback for the experienced driver.
Seven-time world champion Hamilton has endured a woeful 2022 campaign thus far and, following signs of improvement in Barcelona, problems re-emerged for the British driver in Monaco in another disappointing display.
An eighth-place finish was the best that Hamilton could secure in Monte Carlo in his battle with Alpine, where he suffered contact with Esteban Ocon, who earned a penalty, while he found himself held up by Fernando Alonso following the red flag restart.
That has left Hamilton sixth in the Driver's Championship, already a whopping 75 points behind Max Verstappen and clearly way off the pace – putting what would be a record-breaking eighth world title out of reach.
However, it may not be all doom and gloom for Hamilton though as Wolff is confident that he can display a comeback heading into the remainder of the season, pointing out his pace shown in Monaco would ordinarily have found him closer to the front.
“He could have been right there and could have closed Lando [Norris, sixth], or even fight with George [Russell, fifth] and Lando at the front because that was his pace," he told Sky Sports.
“When you look at the bad spells Lewis had, stuck behind Fernando today, the contact with Esteban, the red flag in qualifying yesterday… I think the pendulum will swing and this unlucky situation will stop with Lewis as [he and teammate Russell] are very much on the same pace.”

Hamilton expressed he was 'done' with suspension issues this season, with the Mercedes suffering with 'porpoising' in the opening five races of the season and then encountering a bumpy ride on the Monaco street circuit.
“I am praying that the car doesn’t feel like it does here because here it has felt the worst it has so far with the bumps. My teeth and my jaw going the whole time, I am done with the shaking.
"Ours is so stiff that the suspension is driving it back into the ground. I am looking forward to some more open track and I am praying that it is not as bumpy as here.”
