Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reacts as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen summoned to stewards

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says Max Verstappen’s racing is “over the line” after the Dutchman has been summoned to the stewards alongside Lewis Hamilton after the Briton accused him of “brake testing” him during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Hamilton beat Verstappen to win the inaugural race in Jeddah after clashing with his main title rival during a incident-strewn race.

On lap 37, the Red Bull driver was ordered to give back first place to his main title rival Hamilton. The Dutchman slowed suddenly as Hamilton nearly ran into the back of the Red Bull.

“The driving needs to be assessed and looked at. It’s hard, very hard, maybe over the line hard, Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

“We just want to have a clean championship, may the best man win and if it’s Max at the end then I have peace with that. It just needs to be a fair race.”

Asked if he felt the result was the right one, Wolff told Sky Sports F1: “I don’t think this is yet done.”

“The result at the end, winning the race, I think he [Lewis] deserved it.

“We could have been out a few times with a broken front wing and I don’t want to have dirty laundry in here but…that was spectacular but not a good race.”

On the incident where Hamilton hit the back of Verstappen, Wolff suggests: “What the telemetry shows is he’s slowing down then accelerating again and then slowing down.

“Lewis didn’t know [Verstappen had been told to let him past] and I think that was the wrong sequence of messages that came through there.”

More to come.
