McLaren troll Felipe Massa on TikTok after Lewis Hamilton title threat
McLaren have poked fun at Felipe Massa’s plea to have the result of the 2008 F1 season overturned for being in ‘denial’ at Lewis Hamilton’s title. Bernie Ecclestone sensationally revealed recently that he “decided not to do anything” to protect F1 from a “huge scandal” after learning of Nelson Piquet Jr’s intentional crash at the Singapore Grand Prix.
That race saw Massa finish outside the points after pitting for an unscheduled stop following Piquet Jr’s crash and leaving his box with the fuel hose still attached to his car. Meanwhile, Hamilton was able to finish third to pick up six valuable points in his battle for the championship.
The Briton went on to clinch the world title in dramatic fashion at the season finale in Sao Paulo after overtaking Timo Glock on the final lap with only a few corners remaining. Massa was left heartbroken after Ferrari’s garage had already begun celebrating his race win, which at the time had meant he was set to win the title.
But Ecclestone’s revelation that the sport did nothing later that season after learning of Piquet Jr’s intentional crash in Singapore has led Massa to seek out legal advice. “This is very sad, to know the result of this race was supposed to be cancelled and I would have a title,” he said recently.
“In the end, I was the one who lost the most with this result. So, we are going after it to understand all this. But I intend to study the situation; study what the laws say, and the rules. We have to have an idea of what is possible to do.”
Hamilton is yet to speak publicly on Massa’s recent comments, but his former team McLaren have made their feelings clear. McLaren posted a short clip on TikTok first showing an article about Massa’s remarks followed by a montage of Hamilton’s title win in 2008, along with the caption: “Denial is a river in Egypt.”

The phrase made famous by Wendy Williams back in 2006 has since become a meme regularly posted over the top of clips. The clip also featured Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard snapping his fingers before smirking when the montage of Hamilton driving for McLaren pops up.
Hamilton started his F1 career with McLaren back in 2007 when he came agonisingly close to winning the title in his maiden season. But his success in 2008 was followed by years of mediocrity at McLaren as they struggled to give him a car capable of challenging at the front of the grid.
The British racing superstar eventually made the surprise decision to leave McLaren ahead of the 2013 season to join up with Mercedes, who the year prior finished two places behind his former team in the Constructors’ Championship. However, the move proved to be an inspired choice as Hamilton went on to win six more world titles in an era of dominance with Mercedes.
